How can we improve the energy efficiency of our homes?

Energy efficiency is becoming increasingly important. We are increasingly aware of our energy and water consumption at home. Not only to save money, but also to reduce global pollution by reducing emissions from our homes.

For all these reasons, more and more people are concerned about maximizing the energy efficiency of their homes. Let’s see how.

What is energy efficiency?

The term energy efficiency refers to a home’s energy consumption. A home is considered efficient if its consumption is lower than average.

An efficient home is also efficient if it has renewable energy installations.

Starting in 2020, the construction of energy-efficient buildings in Spain will be mandatory, meaning those with very low energy consumption, as mandated by the European Union.

Energy certification

Since 2013, it has been mandatory to have a document that certifies domestic energy consumption. This document, called an energy certification, is mandatory when selling or renting an apartment, as it assesses both the energy consumption and the harmful emissions emitted by each home.

Within this certificate, each home will have a rating letter, ranging from A (best) to G (worst).

How to improve energy efficiency at home?

Improve home insulation

According to experts, more than 60% of the energy in a home is lost due to poor insulation.

Good thermal insulation will keep the temperature inside the home more stable, meaning we’ll need less energy to heat the house. This will lead to financial savings.

Hiring a company to inspect and improve your home’s insulation is highly recommended, as it will help you reduce energy consumption and, therefore, save on your bills.

Efficient appliances

An older appliance consumes more energy than an efficient one. It’s true that these types of appliances are more expensive, but the significant savings they represent make them a great investment.

Electrical appliances have an energy label that determines their annual consumption.

Efficient air conditioning

As we’ve said, good insulation reduces consumption. However, it’s not the only way. Making good use of windows or blinds will mean we need less energy to heat our homes. The materials used to make doors, windows, and floors will improve efficiency.

Just like household appliances, air conditioning systems also have an energy label. An efficient system will be a better investment.

Lightning

We should make the most of the natural light that enters through our home’s windows by fully opening blinds, awnings, curtains, and so on.

It is also advisable to use LED lighting, which consumes almost 80% less than traditional lighting.

Stand by

You may not believe it, but standby power accounts for 11% of your electricity bill. Therefore, turn off all appliances when you’re not using them.
